A Brief History of Our Local Church

Although the history of Adventists in Humboldt County goes back to it’s beginnings in Ferndale in 1883, it was not until 1909 that a church was organized at Banner Hill, near Tompkins Hill.  In 1915 that church was abandoned and members continued to meet in a private home at 12th & N streets in Fortuna.

In 1920 the Banner Hill church was torn down and the boards and nails were used to build a new church at 16th & L in Fortuna.  Membership grew through the years, the church building was enlarged and by 1952 it was necessary to hold two services each week.  A larger facility was a necessity.

In 1956 work was begun at the present location on Rohnerville Road on a new larger church with a seating capacity of 650.  Members donated their time and money for its construction and on May 31, 1958, it was dedicated free of debt.  In the 1970’s it was extensively remodeled, the foyer was enlarged, restrooms were added upstairs, and new pews and carpeting were installed.  This building today still serves the needs of the 133 Adventist members in Fortuna and the surrounding area.

About Seventh-day Adventists

Adventists believe a Trinity of three persons--the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit--make up one God. They made salvation possible when Jesus, the Son, came to earth as a baby in Bethlehem and lived a sinless life in accordance with the Father's will. When Jesus was crucified for the sins of the people of the world and arose from the dead on the third day, victory was won for everyone. More >>
